Benefits of Sparring

Through Sparring kids gain self-confidence and a greater understanding of themselves…

Is your kid shy and lacking in self-confidence?

Does your child know how to cope with failure and set-backs?

Through sparring kids learn to face up to their weaknesses and turn them into strengths.

Shy kids find it hard to cope with confrontation. Teasing in the school yard can ruin their day. And a threat from a bully can lead to melt-down.

Through sparring kids learn to face up to confrontation.

They learn how to stand in a ring and face someone who is trying to attack them. (And we know that although tkd sparring is controlled, as parents it can still make you nervous.)

Good martial arts instructors build up childrens’ sparring skills slowly. So at first tkd kids face a couple of kicks in a drill. And in time they build up to full sparring bouts lasting around 1-2 minutes. And through their sparring training children learn not to panic. Not to run away. Not to turn their backs but to stand up tall and face their aggressor. To think clearly under huge pressure and to hit back with in a measured way with self-control.

Of course there are inevitable knocks, set-backs and tears along the way.

Tkd kids are well padded up in tkd sparring gear. But the odd bruise is part of the territory. (Serious injury in kids sparring is highly unlikely) When kids get a knock it’s easy for them to burst into tears and give up but over time sparring kids learn not to let the situation beat them. They find strong spirit and determination inside themselves. They learn to take a deep breath and clear their mind of negative thoughts and keep going.

The end result of breaking through these these barriers and fighting these battles is a massive increase in self confidence, self esteem, and overall mental toughness!
