Abuse Prevention & Safety at TRU Taekwondo

Overview

TRU Taekwondo is committed to providing a safe environment and prohibits all types of abuse, bullying, threats, harassment, and hazing. Below is a summary of policies & procedures we have in place for the safety of all participants.

CPR/First Aid Training

We provide periodic CPR and First Aid training for staff as part of our commitment to safety.

Abuse Prevention Training

We provide periodic abuse awareness and prevention training for all adult employees.

Background Checks

We conduct background checks on all employees prior to hire, and at a minimum every other calendar year for employees who regularly interact with minors as part of their role. Our background checks are conducted by the National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI), a leader in youth-centered background screening solutions, and the only background screening company endorsed by the National Council of Youth Sports.

Safe Interactions with Minors

We have a formal policy which seeks to limit one-on-one interactions between an adult and a minor. Where possible, TRU will use the three-person rule to ensure that at least three people are present. Where this is not possible, interactions between an adult and a minor must be observable and interruptible unless an emergency or a valid exception exists under our policy.

Parents are always encouraged to stay and watch their child’s class and participate in TRU events.

Mandatory Reporting

TRU is committed to providing a safe environment for all participants and does not tolerate abuse of children. In accordance with North Carolina law, any suspicion of child abuse, neglect, molestation, or sexual misconduct must be reported to the proper authorities.

North Carolina law (N.C.G.S. § 7B-301) mandates that any person or institution with reason to suspect a juvenile under 18 is abused, neglected, dependent, or has died from maltreatment, must report it to the county Department of Social Services (DSS) where the child resides or is located. Additionally, under N.C.G.S. § 14-318.6, any person 18 years of age or older who knows or reasonably should have known that a juvenile has been the victim of a violent offense, sexual offense, or misdemeanor child abuse must report it to local law enforcement.

Reports to government agencies can be made orally, by telephone, or in writing. The reporter should provide all known information, such as the child’s name, address, age, contact information, details about parents or caretakers, information about other children in the home, the nature of any injury, and any other helpful information. The following are important factors related to reporting suspected abuse:

  • Reporting is required when there is reasonable cause to believe abuse or neglect has occurred; proof is not needed.
  • Reporters are not required to investigate suspected abuse; this is the responsibility of the authorities.
  • The legal obligation to report cannot be waived or delegated.
  • North Carolina law grants immunity from civil or criminal liability for good-faith reporting of suspected child abuse or neglect.
  • TRU prohibits retaliation against anyone who makes a good-faith report.

Any person who knowingly or willfully fails to report as required, or who knowingly or willfully prevents another person from reporting as required, is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor under North Carolina law.
